Wiebke Hoogklimmer - Contralto, Producer and Director

Franz Schubert: Winterreise - a story about the internet (2006)

I want to tell you a story about the internet - a story, which would not have been told a few years ago. Perhaps this story is also interesting for other musicians to make their own productions.

In 2002 I performed a Lieder Recital with the "Winterreise" by Franz Schubert in Berlin. In summer 2004 a German collector of the "Winterreise" visited my website and asked me to get a private recording of this Lieder Recital. I had recorded this Lieder Recital with my Sony Professional and I sold a music cassette for 10 EURO to this collector. I really had not made this recording for the public. The collector liked this recording and he sent me a selfmade CD made from this music cassette with thanks. On this CD he had removed the white noise of the music cassette (but he had also removed a lot of the sound!).

At the end of 2005 I got an email from an English music-lover, that he had heard about my "Winterreise" - CD from a Dutch music-lover and that he wanted to buy it. I got a huge shock, because I was afraid that the German collector had distributed his selfmade CD of my recording all over the world, and I made inquiries. But the collector was a gentleman: He had not distributed his selfmade CD, but he had told the other music-lovers about my recording. I contacted all the "Winterreise"-lovers and I promised to make a CD from my recording by myself.

I got myself different sound programmes, experimented with them and now a CD is generated from my analog live recording! I have removed the white noise and other bothering noises. I have made an effort to get the analog sound of the live recording as true to the original as possible. This is very important for me, because I prefer the analog sound to the digital sound.

When the CD was bought by the different "Winterreise" collectors, I remembered a talk with a collegue about CD Baby. The Website http://cdbaby.com offers a chance for independent musicians to sell their CD’s in the USA. I have bought an UPC-Barcode from CD Baby and now my CD "Franz Schubert: Winterreise" is available on CD Baby and on iTunes (and other digital distributors). You can listen to all my songs for free here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/hoogklimmer. If you have installed iTunes on your computer, you can click on this link to see my CD: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/franz-schubert-winterreise/164021978?i=164021987

The digital selling is a very easy way for independent musicians to sell their music. You don’t need a record company, external sales and distribution etc. You only need your MP3’s and a jpg-file of your cover.

I hope you will enjoy this story!
And by the way, if you are interested in MySpace, you are welcome as my friend: http://www.myspace.com/wiebkehoogklimmercontralto.

PS: Now we are in the year 2018. Myspace is not more interesting. You will find my "Winterreise" on many shops, i.e. on Amazon.com und Amazon.co.uk. And you can listen to all songs on Spotify.
I am curious what will happen in the future......
